WSC Celebrates the Academy of Craft Training’s Inaugural Graduating Class
On Tuesday, May 9, White-Spunner Construction (WSC) celebrated the commencement of the Mobile Academy of Craft Training’s (ACT) first graduating class. The inaugural class boasted 25 students from Mobile and Baldwin county public schools – students who, without training from the ACT and support from members of the Alabama State Department of Education and Alabama Industrial Training, would not have the chance to work for area contractors.
“Without the Academy of Craft Training, so many students in our area would not have the opportunity or ability to create a career of this stature for themselves immediately following high school graduation,” said White-Spunner Construction’s COO, Jeff Carrico. “The Academy provides a well-rounded education while allowing students to choose a career path that allows them to be productive members of society at a very early age.”
In a few short weeks, Matthew Jenkins, a graduate of the ACT-Mobile and senior at Mary G. Montgomery High School, will officially begin work with White-Spunner Construction’s civil division. At the ACT, Jenkins majored in building construction, earning his OSHA 10 certification, National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) core competencies, and graduating as a Level 1 Carpenter. Across the Gulf Coast, students like Jenkins will begin similar work with a variety of area contractors.
“Matthew was a wonderful student who had the courage to choose his own path,” Carrico said. “He interned with White-Spunner for two terms and knew he had a place on our team. We are lucky to have him, and we hope he can be an example to other students.”
During ACT-Mobile training and after graduation, students have the opportunity to pursue internship and job opportunities with ACT-partner companies across a variety of market sectors. White-Spunner Construction and the Academy of Craft Training invite all trades, contractors and construction companies to participate.
