Leed Building
White-Spunner Construction is a privately-held company that has been a leading proponent of green building. The corporate headquarters was built following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) requirements. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED, is a green building certification program for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods. LEED certified buildings promote clean, renewable energy, are cost-efficient and have a positive impact on the health of occupants. As building owners and construction industry leaders have come to realize, green design is not only good for the environment, but also for business. White-Spunner Construction has been an early advocate of sustainable practices, building some of the first LEED certified buildings along the Gulf Coast.
This LEED Gold certified, state-of-the-art Seafood Waste Processing Plant for the Gulf Coast Agricultural Seafood Cooperative in Bayou La Batre, Alabama recycles 5,900 tons of shrimp and crab waste annually and is one of the only LEED certified industrial sites in the state.
The Muses, a 263-unit mixed-use apartment complex in New Orleans, was the first LEED certified apartment building in the state of Louisiana.
Memorial Hall, the 54,000-square-foot student business and instructional services center at Faulkner Community College in Bay Minette, Alabama, includes LEED features such as a large, panoramic skylight that lowers the building's energy needs. It also features water-conserving fixtures, and the recycling of about 74 percent of construction waste.
Enterprise Green Communities
Enterprise Green Communities provides funding and technical expertise to help build, rehabilitate and operate healthier, more efficient homes. By developing the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria – the first green building framework to address the unique needs of the affordable housing sector – this organization works to bring the improved health, economical and environmental benefits of sustainable construction practices to low-income families.
The Enterprise Green Communities Criteria are grouped into eight categories: integration and design, location and neighborhood fabric, site improvements, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials beneficial to the environment, healthy living environment, and operations and maintenance. Since its inception in 2004, Enterprise Green Communities has supported 550 organizations across the country, created and rehabilitated 38,000 homes, and has invested more than $2 billion in the development and preservation of healthy, green affordable homes.
White-Spunner Construction recently completed our fourth project in compliance with the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria for Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, a real estate development company dedicated to revitalizing the Gulf Coast by creating high-quality communities that are safe, healthy, sustainable and affordable. These projects include:
McCaleb Residences: This rental housing initiatve consists of 43 apartment units, 21 of which are designated as permanent supportive housing for the homeless.
The Deaconess – Recently completed in the fall of 2015, this development consists of 40 efficiency units and was a renovation of the former Bethany Nursing Home in New Orleans, which had been left vacant since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The Delamore – Located just one mile from the French Quarter in New Orleans, this 26-unit apartment complex features six units built specifically for individuals with special needs.
The Harrell Building/King Rampart Apartments: The mixed-use development incorporates 20,000 square feet of office and retail space with 70 apartment units and parking for mixed-income seniors.
