The Gulf Shores Airport Authority contracted White-Spunner Construction to build a 5,277-square-foot air traffic control tower. This seven-level structure features two-toned precast concrete exterior panels supported by steel and concrete floor systems. Architectural steel canopies adorn all four sides of the tower, while the curtainwall window glass and glazing were engineered to surpass hurricane and impact resistance standards, given its proximity to the Gulf Coast. The tower consists of nearly two million pounds of concrete, over six miles of copper electrical and communications wiring and stands 95 feet tall. It contains a state-of-the-art communications system that allows aircraft to connect with tower controllers from more than thirty miles away. Furthermore, WSC assumed responsibility for coordinating utilities, as well as overseeing the installation of asphalt driveways and concrete sidewalks.
